Harishchandragad via Nalichi Vaat

By Yatin

Harishchandragad has 7 different routes and Nalichi Vaat is second most toughest one. (Toughest one is of course climbing KokanKada).

Take a 6.30 pm bus from Kalyan and get down to village Sawarne before start of Malshej Ghat. From Other end of village and route reaches to Kalu river. Cross the river and take route that climbs to a big plateau. From plateau, you can see one range on right and see a small pass. Cross the pass keeping the hamlet on plateau on left and u reach Belpada. Belpada is place to do an overnight stay. Hire a guide if you can to take you at least to Nali.

Belpada is right opposite to KokanKada. Take route that goes towards KokanKada. From middle of KokanKada, take left route and start climb through left stream. The stream takes you to the fourth ‘Ghal’ in which the climb starts. Then a staircase of 10 steps with each step being 8-10 feet comes across. In couple of steps, you have water availability till Jan. This is last resource of water.

After the steps end, a huge rock cliff comes across which takes about 3 hours to climb. Climb through side of rocks and one can see a small tree of ‘Umber’. Turn left here from the tree turning along a huge rock and enter the 4th ‘Ghal’ which takes to top.

The rocks of this ‘Ghal’ are made up of slate rocks which slides a lot. Be careful negotiating these rocks. After about 3 hours climb, the ‘ghal’ closes by a horizontal wall. This wall of 20 feet needs to be climbed with care and simple walk of another 30 mins takes to top of wall.

From here, turn to Right and reach a rock wall after 30 mins. 30 mins climb through this wall and another 30 mins trek takes to a plateau. Walk to other end of plateau to reach last rock wall. Cross the wall in another 30 mins and take last climb to reach top of Kokan Kada.

  • It takes about 9 to 12 hrs to reach the top.
  • No water sources after the small water streams.
  • Do not to this in monsoon… rocks are slippery.
  • Not a trek for first timers.
  • Carry ropes if possible. Free climb is dangerous.

Monsoon is too risky for Nalichi Vaat.

The visibility is very poor cause of clouds and fog.
The rock is a slate rock which is not firm and breaks easily even during normal and is very dangerous in monsoon.

Ideal time is November to February when is cold.
Dont carry big sack as its difficult to climb with big one.

It is more of a tough route than a risky route.. its not that difficult except for the steep gradient!

First patch around 15/17 feet..
Second patch near the tree.. around 8-10 feet .. crumbling holds.. climb from the inner side..

I did not require any ropes as such and did it with sacks on..
But again.. if a large group with relative newbies on.. then ropes is better ..coz even if the grip is firm..the rock isn’t..so it is upon the ascender to see what he holds and where he steps..! If that fine,.. no need of ropes!

In dark we took long.. but next time around it was i believe 6/8 hours..don’t remember exactly..large group would demand say at least 10 hours..

No animals en route..except for monkeys..
no water.. except for the last stream spot..
Rains.. it is I wouldn’t say impossible.. but something very very un-thought of.. but
The route would be akin to a vertically flowing river…. holds aren’t a problem as you can always resort to ropes and equipments if needed… the biggest prob in rains would be the falling rocks from above..massive rock falls!

Do it in december, rocks dry sufficiently by then and even the steam spot holds water by that time..! Good trek.. one of my fav.. now waiting to be done third time..

Routes to Harishchandragad
1. Khubi-Khireshwar-Tolar Khind-Harishchandreshwar Mandir.
2. Khubi-Khireshwar-Junnar Darwaja-Balekilla-Harishchandreshwar Mandir.
3. Kotul-Kothale-Tolar Khind-Harishchandreshwar Mandir.
4. Pachnai-Harishchandreshwar Mandir.
5. Sawarne-Kelevadi-Sadhale Ghat-Bail Ghat-Harishchandreshwar Mandir.
6. Sawarne-Belpada-Nalichi Vaat-KokanKada-Harishchandreshwar Mandir.
7. Sawarne-Belpada-KokanKada climb.

There is one more route which is also tough, but yet un-explored by me.
It comes climbing through cliffs between Pachnai and Kothale village and joins the route coming from Tolar Khind at 3rd hill.

Once @ night…. once in day light..

anything is suitable except for Sadhale ghat and Nalichi waat…
Route from Pachnai is the easiest..
Most used.. Tolar Khind via Khireshwar..

Nalichi waat has 2 patches to be negotiated..
the lower one.. around 20 feet..
Second one near the tree.. around 10 feet

Lower one has good holds..
The second one.. provides fragile rocks and crumbling holds..
