we at Trek Mates, have arranged a trek to Lohagad on 26th July 2009, (starting on 25th Night).
Little info about Lohagad
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 3400 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Base Village: Malavali
Lohagad is very wide spread fort. There are 4 doors to Lohagad from the nearby village -Lohgadwadi. i.e. ‘Ganesh Darwaja’ , ‘Narayan Darwaja’ , ‘Hanuman Darwaja’ and ‘Maha Darwaja’. Some sculptures can also be seen on Maha Darwaja. The famous spot on Lohagad is ‘Vinchu Kata’ a range of hills that looks like Capricorn. Amazing view of Pawana Dam is also visible from the back side of Lohagad.
The wealth from Surat was brought here under the leadership of Netaji Palkar and kept here for some period.
One can see Purandar on south-east. Sinhagad as well as Tung and Tikona can also be clearly seen. This fort is of Satwahan Era and of great importance in Shivaji’s period as to keep watch on Konkan and Bor Ghat. This fort is historically very crucial and must be visited by trek lovers and history lovers.
Bhaje Caves : The ancient Viharas and Stupas of Buddhists indicate that they were Heenyana Buddhists, who do not believe in idol worship. Here we can find 8 more Stupas. There is a temple, which is Surya-Mandir or Temple of Sun. the chariot of Sun God is carved here. The constructions here are highly astonishing, and remained intact even after more than 2000 years. The wooden planks used here have not degraded yet. The place is now under the care of ASI.
