Akshaya Patra

Akshaya Patra (which means an “‘inexhaustible vessel” from which food can be drawn) began providing meals for children in 2000. From feeding 1,500 children in five Bangalore schools, the organization has grown to support close to 1 million children in 16 locations across six states.

The nonprofit sees education as a tool that can unlock a cycle of hunger and poverty.

“A wholesome meal is a powerful incentive to draw underprivileged children to schools, retain them and enhance their performance,” Venkat says. “Otherwise, these children would never go to school and have a chance for a basic education.

“Our program has played an important role in sensitizing the state government and bureaucracy about the need for mid-day meals across the state,” he adds. “This has led to widening access to education.”

“Fortunately for us, some of our corporate partners were very creative this year.”

— Michelle Sklar, Senior Director of Development, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties

Overall, corporate donations account for approximately 32 percent of the total funds Akshaya Patra raises. Cisco contributions to the group doubled this year, paying for more than 20,000 meals.
