You mustve seen the photos of the summer treks and camps organised by SPROUTS to Bandhavgarh, Hide-Out, Sudhagad and also photos of earlier treks to Dhak Bhairi, Karnala, Avchitgad, Peth (Kothaligad), Chanderi etc.
The last weekend of June (Sun June 26, 2011) we intend to trek to Prabalgad. Here’s a little intro of Prabalgad:
Prabalgad is a fortress located in between Matheran and Panvel, placed snug at 707m/2320ft. The rugged fortress, visible from the Mumbai Pune expressway, was earlier known as Muranjan, until it was taken over from the Mughals and renamed by Maratha forces, under Shivaji’s rule.
The fort can be reached easily by taking a detour from Poinje Phata about 6-7km from Panvel. It’s an easy and relaxed trek with dense forest in patches. There are several small waterfalls nearby and are enjoyed by locals over the weekends.
Prabalgad was initially decided by the British to be developed as a hill-station but was later dropped and Matheran selected for the same, as it lacked a permanent/annual source of water on the plateau. Prabalmachi (fort) gives us lovely views of peaks in the vicinity, including its parallel cousin Irshalgad, also called Shivaji’s Saddle. It is a very popular trek for beginners and those wishing a relaxed and easy trek!
Meet @ Dadar on the Dadar-Panvel Bus Depot @ 6am and take the bus to Panvel. Those reaching directly at Panvel should meet at Panvel Bus Depot sharp at 6:00am. The group intends to return to Panvel by 6-7pm.
Trek Fees: Rs. 550 + Travel fare, please wear proper shoes/footwear, carry at least 2litres of water per head, besides any fruit (if necessary), rainwear/umbrella and a change pair of clothes in case you intend to get wet in the rain/streams. Light snacks & refreshments, literature and guidance about wildlife sighted will be provided by the organisers/experts.
