Thename describes place itself. The King of all the forts.
It is to the south-west 50 Kmsfrom Pune. It boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivajion any fort. He spent almost 25/30 yrs here. Rajgad is famous for itsconstruction.
Thisfort has witnessed lots of historic events, including the birth of RajaramChhatrapati, the death of Shivaji’s Queen Saibai, the return of Shivaji fromAgra, theantyayatra of Tanaji Malusare to his Konkan village, the burial of AfzalKhan’s head in the Mahadarwaja walls of Ballekilla, the strict words ofSonopant Dabir toShivaji, and the Khandoji Khopade episode. The diameter of thefort at the base is 40 km making it difficult for anybody to lay siege to it.Source(wikipedia)
Thefort can be divided into four different parts based on geographical terrain andfortification. These are the three sub-plateaux (Machee) namely PadmavatiMachee, Suvela Machee and Sanjevani Machee, and at the centre is the Ballekilla.
Rajgad Fort: Has 4 layers(Machee) namely Padmavati Machee, Suvela Machee andSanjevani Machee, and at the centre is the Ballekilla.
Padmavati Machee (north end) : This machee is the site of Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake, Chor Darwaja, Pali Darwaja, Gunjavane Darwaja, Daru Kothar (storage of arms and ammunition), Diwankhana, Rajwada (ruins), Ghod Tale (Horse Lake), Sadar (office) and Dhalkathi (flag hoisting place).
Sanjeevani Machee (southwest/west end) : This huge, beautiful and royally constructed machee faces west and has a three-stepped (layered) fortified structure. Each of the lower levels is separated from the higher one by a fortified bastion with a gate that could be defended independently. The lowest level is beautifully fortified by double curtain walls (chilkhathi) separated by a deep trench, on average 12 feet across. One can walk between these walls. The outer wall has openings to let soldiers out for sudden attack.
Suvela Machee (south east) : This is another grand machee facing east with lots of secret routes and doorways. This one is a double-stepped fortified machee with the steps separated by a beautiful bastioned doorway. At the end of first step a hole cuts across the rock; one can sit in this hole (nedhe). The final (lowest) step like Sanjeevani Machee has a double curtain wall. To the south side of this machee one can see a beautiful triangular bastion called Kaleswari buruz having an escape door near it. The home of the renowned military leader Tanaji Malusare was in this machee.
Bale Killa (centre) : This is the highest part of the fort which has remains of palaces, water cisterns and caves. It has a beautiful entrance door called Mahadarwaja. One can view the whole fort and the vast surrounding expanse.
Rajgadto Torna :
The route startsfrom “Male Darwaaja” of Rajgad, descending along the left side of”Sanjeevni Machi” and proceeds through a few houses. It continuesthrough the woods and is about 5-6 hours walk. The road ends in front of “Budhla Machi”. Here one has to climb a small rock patch. A walk of 15-20minutes eastwards leads to the temple of “Mengai Devi”. This templeserves as an accommodation facility.
Gunjavne -> Rajgad Fort ( Padmavathi Machee ) -> Bale killa/Suvela machee -> Sanjeevani Machee -> Alu Darwaja -> 5 hr trek ->Budhal Machee -> Mengai temple -> Bini Dharwaja -> Velhe – > Pune
This fort is believed to have been constructed by the Shaiva Panth, followersof the Hindu god Shiva, in the 13th century. A Menghai Devi temple, alsoreferred to as the Tornaji temple, is situated near the entrance of the fort.In 1643, Shivaji, son of a local jagirdar with royal ambitions, captured thisfort at the age of sixteen, thus making it one of the first forts in what wouldbecome the Maratha empire. Shivaji renamed the fort Prachandagad, andconstructed several monuments and towers within it.
In the 1700s, the Mughal empire gained control of this fort after assassinationof Shivaji’s son Sambhaji. Aurangzeb, then Mughal emperor, renamed this fort Futulgaib(Divine victory), in recognition of the difficult defense the Mughals had toovercome to capture this fort. It was restored to theMaratha confederacy by theTreaty of Purandar.
Goddess Toranjai : It is a small temple where goddesses Somjai & Toranjai are worshipped. Ahead we can see the lakes called Toran & Mhasoba.
Maal & Safeli bastions : On the west of Kothi Darwaaja are the bastion Maal, & the latter one is to the south of the former. Near Safeli is a construction called Lakadkhaana, where wood was stored. Here is the way to Kokan Darwaaja & to Budhla machi.
Budhla machi : In Marathi “Budhla” means a vessel, & “Budhla” Machi looks like a vessel kept upside down. This diff is a breathtaking spot on the fort. From here, a cheek was kept on the western side of this fort.
Bini Darwaaja : This is the main entrance to the fort from Velhe and is situated to the northwest of the fort. The bastion on the left side has collapsed. The path ahead leads to Kothi Darwaaja.
Kothi Darwaaja : Ascending the steps carved in the rock, we enter the Kothi Darwaaja facing east. Here we come across some guardrooms. Way along the wall towards east takes us to the temple of goddess Toranjai.
Hanuman Bastion: This bastion is situated to the east of Kothi Darwaja. Here we can see the idol of hanuman facing south and a flag post. The way ahead leads to the bastion Bhel. Further eastwards we come to Zunjar Machi.
Konkan Darwaaja : Kokan Darwaaja still exhibits the constructional features that prevailed during 17th century. Here the fortification is the better condition. It lies on the way to Budhla Machi.
Temple of goddess Mengai : This is the only place on the fort where one can stay. It has two doors & the roof is still in the need of repairs. Here the group “Pune Ventures” has put a map of Torna. In front of the temple is a Deepmala (a structure that supports oil lamps & is always found in every temple of Lord Shiva).
Zunjar machi : It is situated on the western side & a wonderful spot to see. However, in the recent period, way here has been destroyed, & hence it cannot be reached easily.
