WTA Trek To Valley Of Flowers-Hemkund Sahib
Valley Of Flowers:
In the lap of nature, the beauty of blossoms that allows one to have a look of a different world on the same planet i.e. ‘The World of Flowers’.In this region there are about 500 species of flowers that also makes this World Heritage Site, a pharmaceutical resource.
Framed with 6000m mountains located at West Himalayas, in the state well known as ‘Devbhoomi’ i.e. Uttarakhand; the valley was unknown to the outside world till a British Mountaineer Frank Smythe inadvertently discovered it in 1931. When Smythe and his team lost their way back after the successful expedition which was to scale Mt. Kamet, a peak in Garhwal. Theywere astonished when witnessed the glorious sight of the beautiful blossoms & variety of flora and named the region ‘Valley of Flowers’ on which Smythe also wrote a book further with the same name. His words ‘In all my mountain wandering, I have not seen a more beautiful valley where the human spirit may find repose’ adequately substantiate the beauty of this heaven on earth.
Shri Hemkund Sahib:
Near the famous Valley of flowers there is a well-known Sikh pilgrimage named ‘Shri Hem KundSaheb’ that gives enormous contentment of ethics & devotion to the thousands of devotees visiting throughout the whole world, every summer. Placed with high altitude lake of around 4329m, surrounded by seven huge mountains that collectively known as HemkundParvat; also close to the lake there is a sacred Gurudwara that stands as the epitome of all principles that constitute Sikh faith. With an incredible naturally made surrounding, the pilgrimage is situated at 15,000 feet above the sea level in Northern India.
‘Hemkund’ is a Sanskrit word derived from ‘Hem’ which means ‘Snow’ & ‘Kund’ which means ‘Bowl’; hence the name suggests itself as the ‘Bowl of Snow’. There are various mythologies behind the etymology of the place; as per the DashamGranth, this is the place where Raja Pandu practiced Yoga. In addition the DashamGranth also says that God ordered Sikh Guru Gobind Singh ji (the Xth Guru of Sikhs) to take birth while he was in deep meditation at the Mt. of Hemkund; further in BachitraNatak, the autobiographical account of GuruGobind Singhji, it is said that it was at Hemkund ‘adorned with seven snow peaks’ where he meditated in his previous birth.
Further talking more about the piousness of the place, the Hindu Mythology says that on the very bank of this lake a number of sages & religious teachers including Rishi Medhasa of MarkandeyaPurana& Lord Lakshman (the brother of Lord Rama) performed penance. Besides the Gurudwara we can also see a temple of Lord Lakshman here. The particular lake is the source of Laxman Ganga, also known as Hem Ganga, stream that merges with the Pushpawati stream flowing from the ‘Valley of Flowers’, at Ghangaria. From this very point on, the river is known as Laxman Ganga.
Being it a very famous Trek destination having a prodigious religious history, we allow Trekkers to have glimpses of the beauty of nature including the Rhodobendron (Buraans), blossoming wild roses, ferns and alpine flowers bounded as well as the mesmerising charm of the surging naturally maintained water of Lakshman Ganga.

Roopkund – Mystery Lake Trek 03 to 13 September by Explorers
About Roopkund… (Above 16000 Feet from Sea Level)
The Roopkund Trek is to a Himalayan trekker what the movie ‘Sholay’ is to a hardcore Bollywood buff. Just like Sholay is the complete Bollywood entertainer (it has action, drama, comedy, romance), Roopkund is the ideal Himalayan trek. This trek has snowcaps, meadows, lakes, forests, folklore; and yes, it has an intriguing flashback too. Roopkund is a mountain lake, lying in the Garhwal Himalayas in the Chamoli district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Situated at a high altitude, the lake remains frozen almost throughout the year. Roopkund is also called the ‘Mystery Lake’, or the ‘Skeletal Lake’, on account of the several hundred human skeletons found scattered in and around the lake.
Roopkund Trek is the perfect route to showcase the surreal Himalayan beauty;and it the perfect trek to initiate you into high altitude treks. The trek starts from Mandoli and after gradually trekking uphill for 5 days you will reach Roopkund which lies at approximately 5000 meters above sea-level. At this altitude the level of oxygen in the air is considerably lesser than what the lowland folks are used to, and the Team Explorers will give you various tips to enable you to effectively cope with this change. Being in good physical shape will ensure that you adapt to the thinning air quickly. Also, good fitness level will allow you more energy to enjoy the spectacular views, So when you plan for this trek, also plan out a fitness regime for yourself.
Whatever the season, the weather in the mountains is delicately balanced, and can go from sunny to cloudy in minutes. This adds another dimension to the adventure, and you should be equipped with wind and water proof clothing to face these weather changes. The first couple of days on the trek will take you through quaint villages, cheerful streams, and rapid mountain rivers. The sunlight streaming through the trees in the forests will make the entire mountainside glow golden. Trek some more, and you will soon leave the trees behind. Now you will be greeted by miles and miles of lush meadows, called ‘Bugyals’ in the local tongue. The Bugyals are dotted with small and big lakes at intervals. The pure air, the poignant greens and the effervescent blues will make you forget all your troubles. Next is the summit stretch, where your stamina will be tested as the air gets thinner and thinner. At the end of the climb lies the coveted Roopkund, frozen, serene, and pristine. Near the lake you can still find lots of skeletons, which have been well preserved because of the cold after all these centuries. From here, you can spot a lot of other peaks – Trishul, Nandaghungti and Choukhamba.
The route followed on the Roopkund trek overlaps with a pilgrimage which occurs every year, called the Raj Jat Yatra. This festive pilgrimage is held each year to worship goddess Nanda Devi, and people from several villages of the Kumaon and Garhwal participate in this Yatra. This Yatra starts from a small village ‘Nauti’ near Karnaprayag, and goes beyond Roopkund to Homkund. If you are lucky enough to be on the trek during this Yatra, you will meet a lot of locals dressed in their traditional attire participating in the festival. Meeting these welcoming and warm-hearted people will be an unforgettable encounter. The Roopkund trek is a most enriching experience for the body and the soul. This time spent amidst the mountains will remove the cob-webs from your mind and will thoroughly rejuvenate you.
