The siege lasted long and all food stocks had finished and made things difficult for Shivaji Maharaj. It was impossible to defeat the 30000 soldiered troop of Siddi. Shivaji Maharaj with some 600 mavalas decided to escape to Vishalgad, 65 kms away. It was Ashadi Pournima, with heavy rains falling. Chatrapati Shivaji Raje informed Siddi that he would surrender hence Siddi troops were little careless. Taking advantage Shivaji Maharaj escaped from Panhala. He wasn’t safe till he reached Vishalgad. Some how Siddi’s troops spotted Shivaji Raje’s escape, he immediately sent horsed troops behind him and they got hold of Shivaji, who was later brought to Siddi’s camp. But it was Raja Shivaji’s game plan; person whom they had caught was not Shivaji Raje, but Siva Kashid Nhavi who was immediately killed. Siddi somehow came to know that Shivaji Maharaj was on his way to Vishalgad, and so sent troops behind him. Shivaji Raje knew that Siddi’s troops were following him. Baji Prabhu, Chatrapati Shivaji’s loyal sardar decided to stay in Ghod Khind with 300 mavalas, a col were mountain ridges near… Read more

One Day Monsoon Trek to Visapur Fort Lonavla with MumbaiRangers on 26 June 2016

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 03:48 AM PDT

Dear friends we at MumbaiRangers invite you all for One Day Monsoon Trek to Visapur Fort Lonavla with MumbaiRangers on 26 June 2016   It was built during 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of Maratha Empire. Visapur fort was built much later than Lohagad but the histories  of the two forts are closely linked.   In 1818, when reducing the Peshwa’s forts, the strength of Lohagad and its fame as the treasury of the Maratha kingdom, caused the English to make special  preparations for its attack. A detachment of 380 European and 800 native soldiers, with a battering train, summoned from Konkan, were joined by artillery  from Chakan, and two other British battalions. On 4 March 1818, Visapur was attacked and occupied. Making use of its higher elevation and proximity to  Lohagad, the British troops set up their cannons on Visapur and bombarded Lohagad, forcing the Marathas to flee. Thus, in 1818, Lohagad-Visapur was  taken over by the British in 1818 AD and placed under the command of a Colonel Prother. Considering, the strategic importance of Visapur, both in the  north Konkan and the south Deccan gateways were blown up now  a few huts, nothing was left standing.   The best time to trek is a little after the rains, as the weather is a lot smoothing and easy. Plus the lush green carpet that welcomes you at Visapur fort  is worth every penny. As we started the trek and walked along the walls for the mighty VISAPUR. I pondered in thought how awesome it is today and how much  better would it be in its prime time. The royal decoration; chariots and horses. Troop movements and troop camp – with Shivaji Raje himself standing.  As from Visapur one could get the entire view of Lohagad fort. As both forts are within striking distance, the British army captured Visapur and later  also took over Lohagad fort.       Type: Hill Fort Height: 3556 Feet above MSL (Approx) Grade: Easy Endurance : Medium Base Village: Malavali     Trek Leader: Swapnil Kawad     Day 1 : Sat… Read more

Monsoon Trek to Harihargad with MumbaiRangers 26 June 2016 Leaving on 25 June saturday Night

Posted: 09 Jun 2016 03:29 AM PDT

Dear Friends we invite you all for Monsoon Trek to Harihargad with MumbaiRangers 26 June 2016 Leaving on 25 June saturday Night   Type : Hill forts Fort Range : Trimbakeshwar District : Nashik Endurance : Easy Difficulty : Medium Height : 3676 ft   Trek Leader jatin Singh   Harihar, also called Harish Fort, is 6.43 km west of Trimbak and 1,120.44 metres (3,676 feet) above sea-level. The trek to Harihar Fort is short yet tiring. The last 200 feet of the hike is a nerve-racking climb through steep rock cut stairs inclined at 80 degrees. The descent is particularly exhilarating as you have to climb down and at one point face a sheer 500 ft drop. The architecture of the stairs is so diverse and outstanding and offers spectacular and  occasionally scary views of the valley below. The fort is situated amidst the huge Vaitarna dam and the Trimbakeshwar mountain ranges offer stunning  views of the area around. It was of substantial importance in earlier days to keep watch on the route crossing the range connecting Maharashtra to Gujarat.  Trimbakeshwar range spreads from north of Igatpuri to west of Nasik. It is divided in two parts, with forts of Basgad, Utvad, hill of Fani, Harihar and  Trimbakgad on one part and those of Anjaneri and Hargad on the other. The water flows away from this region because of the one – sided slope of Sahyadris. The fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village and is located on top of a triangular massif with all the three sides being vertical  and hence naturally fort
ified. There is only one access to the fort through a 200ft high rock cut staircase inclined at an 80 degree angle.   It was one of the forts in the possession of the Ahemadnagar Sultans. Captain Briggs from the British army visited the fort in 1818, and left a fairly  detailed description. He described the ascent as truly wonderful. In 1636 Harihar, Trimbakgad, Tringalvadi and a few other Poona forts were given by the Marathas to the Mughals. Hariharwas one of the s… Read more
