Dear friends we at MumbaiRangers invite you all for One Day Monsoon Trek to Visapur Fort Lonavla with MumbaiRangers on 31 July 2016   It was built during 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of Maratha Empire. Visapur fort was built much later than Lohagad but the histories of the two forts are closely linked.   In 1818, when reducing the Peshwa’s forts, the strength of Lohagad and its fame as the treasury of the Maratha kingdom, caused the English to make special preparations for its attack. A detachment of 380 European and 800 native soldiers, with a battering train, summoned from Konkan, were joined by artillery from Chakan, and two other British battalions. On 4 March 1818, Visapur was attacked and occupied. Making use of its higher elevation and proximity to Lohagad, the British troops set up their cannons on Visapur and bombarded Lohagad, forcing the Marathas to flee. Thus, in 1818, Lohagad-Visapur was taken over by the British in 1818 AD and placed under the command of a Colonel Prother. Considering, the strategic importance of Visapur, both in the north Konkan and the south Deccan gateways were blown up now a few huts, nothing was left standing.   The best time to trek is a little after the rains, as the weather is a lot smoothing and easy. Plus the lush green carpet that welcomes you at Visapur fort is worth every penny. As we started the trek and walked along the walls for the mighty VISAPUR. I pondered in thought how awesome it is today and how much better would it be in its prime time. The royal decoration; chariots and horses. Troop movements and troop camp – with Shivaji Raje himself standing. As from Visapur one could get the entire view of Lohagad fort. As both forts are within striking distance, the British army captured Visapur and later also took over Lohagad fort.   Type: Hill Fort Height: 3556 Feet above MSL (Approx) Grade: Easy Endurance : Medium Base Village: Malavali   Trek Leader: Swapnil Kawad     Meeting Pritam Hotel Dadar E… Read more

Dear Friends We Invite You all for MumbaiRangers one day monsoon Trek to Tringalwadi Fort on 31 july 2016 Sunday    About the Place:   Type: Hill Fort Height: 3638ft above msl Region: Igatpuri District: Thane   Pleasant atmosphere and the cool breeze, makes every trekker visit this fort again. On reaching the top the view of the Tringalwadi Dam is breathtaking   Tringalwadi is a small fort situated in the Igatpuri region, approximate 7 kilometers away from Igatpuri station. It was basically built for the purpose  to keep a watch on the surrounding area. One can see a beautiful entrance with amazing steps, carved in one rock, caves, water cisterns and of course some  remnants on the fortification and a beautiful view of back water of Tringalwadi dam. At the base of the fort are beautiful Jain Caves which are dated back  to the 10th century.   The exact period of construction of this fort is not known, however, by virtue of ‘Jain caves’ near the foothills, one can roughly estimate the fort to be  in existence since 10th century. Also there is no evidence regarding the period during which it was under control of Marathas, however,  during the year 1688; Mughals took control over the fort by perfidy.     We will start with the CST – Kasara Fast Local (Time table given below) People may board the same local from the station of their convenience and meet us in the train directly. Dear Friends we invite you all for MumbaiRangers Trek to Mount Kalsubai highest peak of Maharashtra on 31 July 2016 Leaving 30 July saturday Night   Kalsubai Peak is the highest peak (1646 meters) of the Sahyadris on the border of Igatpuri Taluka, Nashik district and Akole Taluka, of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. ‘Kalsubai’ temple is located at the top most peak of Sahyadri mountain range of Maharastra. The main route starts from the village of Bari which is about six km from Bhandardara. The main route to the temple is at small climbing slope . It usually takes three hours to reach the top from Bari. There small huts in this area who could be very helpful in case of any emergency. There are three iron ladders along this route. There is a well near the last iron ladder as one approaches the top but the water is not potable during the summer. The rest of the route is without water, so it is best to fill water bottles in Bari. It is an easy hike, but parts of it are quite steep. Reptiles like lizards and snakes could be spotted sun-bathing during winter mornings near the ladders. The vastly spread out backwaters of Bhandardara attracts ones attention from the top. To the north of the mountain range forts such as Ramsej, Harihargad, Brahmagiri, Anjaneri, Ghargad, Bahula, Tringalwadi, Kavnai can be seen. To the east one can spot Aundha, Vishramgad, Bitangad, to the west Alang, Madangad, Kulang, Ratangad (south west) and to the south Pabhargad, Ghanchakkar, Harishchandragad can be seen.     Fort info Type: Peak Height: 5400 Feet above MSL (Approx) Grade: Easy- medium Base Village: Bari. Dear Friends we invite you all for Monsoon Trek to Harihargad with MumbaiRangers on 31 July 2016 Leaving 30 July saturday Night   Type : Hill forts Fort Range : Trimbakeshwar District : Nashik Endurance : Easy Difficulty : Medium Height : 3676 ft   Trek Leader jatin Singh   Harihar, also called Harish Fort, is 6.43 km west of Trimbak and 1,120.44 metres (3,676 feet) above sea-level. The trek to Harihar Fort is short yet tiring. The last 200 feet of the hike is a nerve-racking climb through steep rock cut stairs inclined at 80 degrees. The descent is particularly exhilarating as you have to climb down and at one point face a sheer 500 ft drop. The architecture of the stairs is so diverse and outstanding and offers spectacular and occasionally scary views of the valley below. The fort is situated amidst the huge Vaitarna dam and the Trimbakeshwar mountain ranges offer stunning views of the area around. It was of substantial importance in earlier days to keep watch on the route crossing the range connecting Maharashtra to Gujarat. Trimbakeshwar range spreads from north of Igatpuri to west of Nasik. It is divided in two parts, with forts of Basgad, Utvad, hill of Fani, Harihar and Trimbakgad on one part and those of Anjaneri and Hargad on the other. The water flows away from this region because of the one – sided slope of Sahyadris. The fort appears to be rectangular in shape from its base village and is located on top of a triangular massif with all the three sides being vertical and hence naturally fortified. There is only one access to the fort through a 200ft high rock cut staircase inclined at an 80 degree angle.   It was one of the forts in the possession of the Ahemadnagar Sultans. Captain Briggs from the British army visited the fort in 1818, and left a fairly detailed description. He described the ascent as truly wonderful. In 1636 Harihar, Trimbakgad, Tringalvadi and a few other Poona forts were given by the Marathas to the Mughals. Hariharwas one of the sevente… Read more
