Maracas Waterfall located on Waterfall Road in the Maracas St. Joseph Valley is Trinidad’s highest falls with an altitude of 91.5 metres. The falls is a favorite destination for visitors and the Ministry Of Tourism recognising it’s potential has erected signs, along with tables and chairs to make it a more desirable attraction..
The walk from where the vehicles are parked will take thirty minutes ,on a wide open track that gradually ascends into a secluded valley. The trail crosses two gentle streams and midway there is a small path on the right that descends towards the river where there is a gorgeous little fall’s with some Jacuzzi like pools.Along the way melted candles, flowers and fruits can be observed lining the route of the pathway showing testaments of spiritual worship.
At the base of the falls there is not enough hydraulic force to create a plunge pool, but the spurts of water cascading on the rocks create a shower-like spray that is cooling and exhilarating.Visiting the falls is best done in the rainy season when the water pressure is more intense and it’s true magnificence is displayed. This natural wonder is beautified by towering cliffs and evergreen mountains encircled by giant boulders that add brilliance to the landscape.Caution should be taken walking on the rocks which can be slippery but at the same time provide a genuine hydrotherapy. It is strikingly fantastic to sit and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere that boarders the falls,as spraying droplets radiate a rainbow effect on the rocks.
For the adventurous there is a rugged five hour circuit hike to the top where another small waterfall can be discovered. At the summit the trail extends along the river path to Mt, El Tucuche where the source of the river originates. For details visit islandhikers.com or call Mario at 749-2956 .
