Kalavantin Peak/ Fort is considered to be an extension of Prabalgad; a strategic fort from Maratha History in India. The place is about 40/50 KM from Mumbai city. One of the tough climbs even for the regular trekkers. The fort must have been built more as a watch tower for the military. The construction seems to be from the Shilahar Dynasty era; which lasted between 8th and 11th century. There are some holes near the steps which suggest that there might have been an artificial railings when the fort was in use. The harsh weather from the region might have led to the current state of the route to this over a thousand year old place.
It takes anywhere between 2 to 2.5 hours to reach to the base of this fort (Peak). There is a village called Prabalgad Machi at the base. Villagers have made a very good stay arrangements at the village. One can choose to stay overnight and then complete Kalavantin & Prabalgad on next day or complete one of these two forts on the same day.. Kalavantin ascend from here takes around 1 to 1.5 hours. While Prabalgad which is a separate hill, takes almost the same time to climb. Kalavantin fort top is just a narrow place; while Prabalgad is a proper fort with many signs of fortification.
