Mulher Mora – Magnificant mountain range in Nashik | Trekking in Sahyadris | Part 29

Mulher Mora Trek

Location :

The village of Mulher(Mayurnagari) is located on the right (south) bank of the Mausam River, 3.5 km by road east (downstream) of the village of Vide Digar and the Haranbari Dam. It is 9 km by road west (upstream) of Taharabad. It is located on State Highway 14. Mulher Fort is located in Mulher village.
Ganesh mandir on Mulher Machi

History

The Rathod dynasty of Bagul ancestry reigned Baglan between 1310 and 1638. Mulher fort was their capital. The Mughals then gained control of Baglan. For the Surat forays of January 1664 & October 1670, Shivaji Maharaj had followed the route passing through Baglan to reach Surat. On the first occasion, the entire region from Pune to Surat was under the command of the Mughals while on the second occasion, Baglan was mainly under their control. The Mughals chased Shivaji Raje on his return journey but they were defeated in the Kanchana Pass. Soon after this, Shivaji began a campaign in this region. In January 1671 the first assault brought the Salher fort under the Maratha rule. They then attacked Mulher fort but the Mughal Killedar repulsed the attack. However, the Marathas captured the Chaulher fort. In October 1671, the Mughals laid siege to Salher fort. But Shivaji despatched Moropant and Prataprao to break down the siege. They not only lifted the siege of Salher, but also attacked Mulher and captured it in February 1672. This feat resulted in the assimilation of the entire Baglan region into Swarajya.

How to reach :

The nearest village is Mulher. It is connected by road. Buses and rickshaw are easily available from the nearest town Taharabad. From Mulher town the base of the Fort is at 5 km. There is no Hotel or Lodge at Mulher village. It is better to move at uddhav maharaj samadhi mandir or Mulher Machi for resting and night halt. From Mulher machi the trio of forts Mora, Hargad and Mulher can easily be climbed in a day.

Mora fort

Mora fort is located in the Baglan area of Nashik district. There are two main hill ranges in Baglan area, the Selbari range is south of the Dolbari hill range. These two ranges run parallel to each other in east-west direction. Moragad is located on Selbari hill range. All these forts were maintained to keep watch on the Burhanpur-Surat ancient commercial road. The road passes between the two hill ranges.Mora fort is a small fort, close to Mulher fort.

History

No separate history is mentioned of this fort. This fort is adjoining the Mulher fort.
Places to see
There are few rock cut cisterns and caves on the fort, there are two rock cut gates. There is no significant construction on the fort. The pathway to the fort is made of rock cut steps. From the fort Mangi-Tungi, Salher, Salota, Hargad, Mulher, Nhavigad forts are easily seen.
How to reach
There is a good motorable road up to the base village Mulher. It takes about two hour to reach the col between Mulher and Mora fort. The path from the col leads to the fort. There are two gates in good condition. There is no good water on the fort, so it is advisable to carry enough water. It takes about one hour to climb and see the fort.

Fort Raigad was the capital of the most illustrious Maratha sovereign, nurtured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is a monument of his prophetic vision of Hindavi Swarajya.
This is a preamble prior to your electrifying excursion around Fort Raigad. It has been described by European historians as ‘The Gibralter of East’. Various landmarks have lent it the credo of ‘Shivtirth’. The holy shrine has become vibrant by the valour, courage and patriotism of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The sheer vertical rock face tearing into the sky above, appears defiant and insurmountable. It has stemmed many a foreign aggression and protected the Hindavi Swarajya during those historic times.
When he first saw the place, Shivaji Maharaj could not help exclaim:
“This Fort is formidable. All sides appear as if chiselled from a mountain of solid rock. Not even a blade of grass grows on the sheer vertical rock. This is a paragon to house the throne”.
At the foothills near village Pachad, is Chit Darwaja, also known as Jit Darwaja. After gruelling foot-slogging, you reach Khoob Ladha Buruj. It is a strategically located turret, from where an aggressor attacking from either flank could be repelled. Maha DarwajaNearly a mile ahead, after a difficult climb comes the Maha Darwaja. Built over 350 years ago, this main entrance to the Fort stands majestically. It is as imposing and stout today, as it was then! The design of this Maha Darwaja is an enigma. It defies detection of its location to the attacker. Blind curves enroute make it impossible for the attacker to use elephants to knock it down. In the battle of those historic times, elephants were used to demolish fort entrances.
A steep climb of nearly 1450 steps and three and a half hours of extreme demands on your physical stamina, leaves you too exhausted. The magic mantra – Raigad Ropeway – has opened a new chapter of sightseeing – the Fort Raigad. It whisks you to the top, through the clouds and whistling winds, in just 4 minutes. Gone is its exhausting inaccessibility. Now you have all the energy and time to enjoy the sightseeing! Well-trained and courteous guides are at hand to give you a conducted tour of the Fort.
