The locals narrate stories about fort. In the time of Rangrav Aundhekar, the last officer who held the fort for the Peshva, one Supkarna Bhil came with a large following and laid siege to the fort. The siege continued for some time and was not raised until a shot from the garrison destroyed one of the Bhil guns. The Bhils then burnt the village and withdrew. In 1818 Captain Briggs, who visited the fort, mentioned that it was not more than 400 feet (121.92 metres) above the plain.(ref. Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency).

Harihar fort is famous for its Rock cut Stair case which is at an angle of 80 degree . The stair case is devided into two parts, there are around 90 steps in 1st part and in second there are around 120.
The stair case is one metre wide with niches in it , this niches are really helpful while ascending & descending the fort. Really a Unique construction. The architecture of the stairs is so diverse and outstanding and offers spectacular and occasionally scary views of the valley below. The fort is situated amidst the huge Vaitarna dam and the Trimbakeshwar mountain ranges offer stunning views of the area around.
