The unfortunate demise of climbers Mangesh Deshpande & Sadasivan Sekar has been a serious
setback to the field of mountaineering. The two mountaineers had made significant contributions to
trekking in the Sahayadris, pinnacle climbing and other related Himalyan adventure actities.
The expedition to Mt. Tinchen Khang (6010 mt) located in Western Sikkim was led by Mangesh
Deshpande with the other team members being Sadasivan Sekar, Shantanu Pandit, Parag Pendharkar & Anju Panickulam. Mangesh Deshpande & Sadasivan Sekar sumitted the peak on 19th October. However on their way down they met with an accident resulting in their unfortunate death on the
spot. The two sherpas accompanying them were also seriously injured. The initial information
received by the local authorities and news agencies reported an avalanche. However when direct
contact was established with the rescue team it was confirmed that the climbers had met with an
accident. Upon receiving the news of the accident a team of mountaineers from the Organization
immediately left for Sikkim. With the assistance of the rescue team the other team members vis
Shantanu Pandit, Parag Pendharkar & Anju Panickulam have now safely returned.
Mangesh Deshpande & Sadasivan Sekar were members of our mountaineering fraternity. In this
moment of grief we stand by their family and share their sorrow. Mangesh had participated in
various Himalayan activities including expeditions to Mt. Chamser Kangri-Lungser Kangri, Mt.
Nun, Mt. Shriparbat, Mt. Saifee, Mt. Yogeshwar-Chaturbhuj. A software engineer by profession, 41-
year old Mangesh is survived by his wife, daughter & father. Thane based Sadasivan was also a
software engineer by profession and is survived by his mother, father & brother.
