The Sudhagad fort is an ancient hill fort in the Raigad District of Maharashtra situated near a village called Pachhapur near Pali in Maharashtra. The fort is around 2030 feet and is well protected by steep cliffs. It is said that BhoraiDevi is the presiding deity of the Pant Sachiv’s of Bhor village. That is why Sudhagad was earlier known as Bhorapgad. In 1657, the Marathas took over and renamed it “Sudhagad”(the sweet one). Due to its qualities, Sudhagad was proposed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as the capital of Hindavi Swaraj. Shivaji Maharaj visited Sudhagad to survey it, but instead chose Raigad because of its central location.

Major Features The perimeter of this fort is quite big. There is a palace of Pant Sachiv on the fort, where 50 people can stay comfortably. Also there is a temple of Bhorai Devi, where 25-30 persons can be accommodated. On the large plateua at the summit there are two lakes, a house, a big granary, some tombs, a shrine (Vrindavan) and numerous other ruins around the fort area. There are three main gates the largest of which is called the Maha Darwaja is exact replica of the ‘Mahadarwaaja’ (main entrance) on Raigad, Echo Point, Takamak Tok, etc. The best time to trek Sudhagad is during the rainy season as the whole region offers a spectacular view with picturesque surroundings.
