Since 2007 more than half of the world’s population are living in urban environments.
Modern living puts great pressures on our minds and bodies. Pressures like sitting around much of the day, coupled with a general lack of a physical lifestyle puts undue pressure on our internal organs, our joints and muscles. Our minds are put under pressure with the relentless amount of visual and auditory stimuli it receives daily.
Research coming out of studies undertaken by scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Landscape and Human Health Laboratory and elsewhere is showing that a connection to nature is vital to our psychological and physical health because it helps recharge our brains so that we’re better able to cope with the stresses of living a modern lifestyle.
Frances Kuo director of the laboratory at Illinois University says that, like other animals our ingrained dependance on the natural environment is more than likely because like other organisms, we evolved to thrive in our natural surroundings.
A series of studies conducted by Kuo’s lab in public housing projects around Chicago came up with some interesting observations.
The researchers interviewed a number of female residents of the projects. Each subject had been randomly assigned to an apartment that either looked out to trees or grass outside or out onto barren courtyards.
After completing the interviews, the researchers found that those residents whose apartments were overlooking green spaces reported fewer aggressive conflicts, including domestic violence, than those who had no views of green spaces. They also were found to procrastinate less on major goals, such as finding a job or a new home, they were less likely to consider their problems unsolvable.
The benefits of being exposed to green spaces can reach beyond an individual person to the community or even society, by strengthening community ties and helping disadvantaged populations better cope with and solve their problems. Lower crime rates were recorded in Greener areas and there was more socializing between neighbors.
Other studies have found that access to green spaces can also lead to improvements in physical health. A study carried out in Indianapolis found that children in greener neighborhoods had a reduced risk of being overweight or obese. Another study in the Great Britain found that the health disparities normally seen between the wealthy and non-wealthy disappeared when access to green areas was factored in. Yet another study undertaken in Tokyo of 80- to 85-year-olds found that those with access to a green space had a lower rate of mortality, even when socioeconomic status was taken into account.
Many of these studies have shown that even a view of nature can produce positive benefits for the human mind and body. Of course there is the added benefit of improving our overall health and fitness if we are able to get out into nature and do regular exercise in the fresh air.
A number of my videos have been used with people are not able to venture outdoors to give them a sense of the natural environment, with very positive results.
If you have a large screen TV or monitor this HD quality video is ideal, imagine your TV is a window looking out onto this tranquil scene on the forest floor. My short videos are of a higher visual quality than my long-play videos due to file size restrictions when uploading to youtube.
Though my long-play videos are very popular with people enjoying the tranquil sounds of nature filling their homes and workplaces, here are a few of them, enjoy!
The following 8 hour sounds of nature videos are perfect for meditation and relaxation. There are several nature sound videos to choose from, each of them is unique and original.
