Even if you live right in the middle of a city you can do this exercise, walk for as short or as long a distance as your time and capabilities allow.

Walking is something that almost everyone on the planet can do and it’s free. If you haven’t been exercising for some time it is recommended that you consult a professional who can give you personal advice on how to start taking up physical exercise.

Benefits Of Walking
Walking is a relatively low impact exercise which can benefit the mind and body in many different ways. Walking improves your circulation and as a result increases the supply of oxygen to each and every cell in your body, this in turn helps you to feel more alert and alive. A brisk walk is one of the best natural energizers around. It wakes up stiff joints and eases muscle tension so you feel less sluggish.

Increasing your activity level by walking can help lift your mood as feel-good endorphins are released into the bloodstream, reducing stress and anxiety. Studies have shown regular, moderate-intensity exercise (such as brisk walking) to be as effective as antidepressants in cases of mild to moderate depression. Walking is a great time to think more clearly.

Research has shown other benefits of regular walking to, help relieve stress, help manage weight and it reduces your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Recent research has also shown walking to prevent type-2 Diabetes.

For This Exercise
As you walk be mindful and conscious of your breathing. Take good deep natural breaths in and out, but don’t force your breath by breathing in to deeply. Feel the clean air enter your lungs and being distributed around your body. Become aware of any stresses or tensions in your body or mind as you breath in and while you exhale let them all go, release them with your out-breath, consciously asking your stress and tension to leave your body. Repeat until you start to feel a sense of calm enter your mind and body.

Some obvious but often overlooked ways of getting more walking into your lifestyle at work, at home and at leisure. Walk rather than send an email, walk during your lunchbreak for 10-15 minutes, don’t use the lift, take the stairs instead and walk to meetings. Walk the children to school or take your dog for a walk. Instead of using public transport or taking the car, could you walk the distance instead. Park the car further from the entrance to your destination or get off the bus stop a few stops earlier. Be prepared and bring your walking shoes to work.

Walking can be very sociable, meet up with a colleague or friend and walk and talk, you won’t hardly notice that you are exercising. It can be a great motivator to have a walking partner as you can encourage one another, today you might not feel up to it and a partner would encourage you out on a walk while the tomorrow you may be the one helping your partner get motivated.

For The Beginner
If you are just starting out on an exercise program, don’t be in a rush to achieve more than your capabilities. Walking in this instance is not a competition either with yourself or with anybody else, but rather a means of improving your overall general health. Start slowly and build up both your pace of walking and the distance you cover over time. In the beginning, even if it is just a couple of minutes walking out into the garden or even just around the house (you could play this video through speakers or any of my other nature soundscapes and imagine you are walking outside). You can gradually increase how long you walk for and how far you travel, over time building up to a good 30 or so minutes 3-5 times per week at a brisk pace. If you never reach this goal that doesn’t matter as long as you are exercising and well within your limits. Check with a professional physical educator medical practitioner as you progress to oversee everything is in order.
